Dr. Bilal Islam Named a Center of Excellence Physician for Carpal Tunnel Release With Ultrasound Guidance
The Institute of Advanced Ultrasound Guided Procedures recognizes Dr. Bilal Islam of Emerald Coast Sports Medicine in Lynn Haven, Florida as a national Center of Excellence Physician for carpal tunnel release (CTR) using UltraGuideCTR™ and real-time ultrasound guidance.
Center of Excellence Physicians are recognized for their demonstrated expertise in carpal tunnel release utilizing real-time ultrasound guidance and achieving outstanding patient outcomes.
At Dr. Islam’s busy rheumatology and sports medicine practice, he sees a wide range of patients with a variety of conditions. Many of the patients are poor surgical candidates, have multiple comorbidities, are elderly, or have various autoimmune conditions.
However, one thing that unites many of his patients is their struggle with carpal tunnel syndrome.
“For years, my approach to treating carpal tunnel syndrome has been conservative, with treatment options such as splinting, injections, and occupational therapy. I found that these methods were often ineffective, and many patients did not find lasting relief from their symptoms,” says Dr. Islam.
That’s why Dr. Islam was excited to begin using UltraGuideCTR and real-time ultrasound guidance in December of 2021. This minimally invasive technique, which is performed under local anesthesia, has completely changed the way he manages CTS patients at his clinic.
He says his patients are not only finding that their recovery takes just a few days (versus weeks or months as often seen with traditional surgical approaches), but also experiencing lasting resolution of their carpal tunnel symptoms.
Facebook Ad Leads Patient to Minimally Invasive Procedure
Of the many patients he has treated using UltraGuideCTR and real-time ultrasound guidance, Dr. Islam says one in particular stands out: “This patient had undergone a traditional open carpal tunnel release on their right hand three months prior. They experienced a difficult recovery and were left with a noticeable scar,” says Dr. Islam. “Because of this, the patient decided to cancel their left-side carpal tunnel release.
However, after learning about CTR using a minimally invasive approach through our clinic’s Facebook ad, the patient decided to give it a try.” The patient had the procedure two days following our first contact and was able to return to work the following day. What’s more, within one week, Dr. Islam says all of their symptoms had been resolved.
“I truly believe that carpal tunnel release with real-time ultrasound guidance is an excellent option for any patient, regardless of age or comorbidities,” says Dr. Islam. “These outcomes are very important to our patients, particularly those who are elderly and live alone. They appreciate the ability to return to their normal activities so quickly.”
Dr. Islam says feedback from his patients who have experienced carpal tunnel release with real-time ultrasound guidance has been overwhelmingly positive. “I am confident that this technique will continue to be an important part of my practice moving forward,” says Dr. Islam.
